I see, I see what you don't see. These are of course not real fries, but just the name alone makes kids excited. And they taste just as good! Serve these puff pastry fries with a jar of strawberry or raspberry coulis (ketchup) or yogurt (mayonnaise), so the little ones can dip the fries to their heart's content.
1. First, make the compote of apple and pear.
2. Peel the apple and the pear, remove the core, and cut the fruit into pieces.
3. Put the fruit in a saucepan and add the grated lemon or lime peel and 1 or 2 tablespoons of water.
4. Put a lid on the saucepan and let the fruit stew over low heat until the fruit is soft and all the moisture has evaporated. You can remove the lid from the saucepan for a moment if needed.
5. Blend into a compote and let cool.
6. Stir through the compote again.
7. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
8. Take the puff pastry out of the freezer. Spread
2 sheets with the compote and place the other 2 sheets on top.
9. Let the sheets sit until they are thawed enough to cut.
10. Cut the sheets into strips with a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
11. Place a sheet of baking paper on a baking tray and lay the fries on it.
12. Sprinkle a little sugar over them, so it looks like there is salt on the fries.
13. Bake the fries in the oven for 15 minutes.
